TRACING OUTLINES
The remarkable story of the Outlines gallery presented several challenges when attempting to
tell this story so many years later- much of the film focused on the discovery of the two Outlines scrapbooks which are presently gifted to the Smithsonian Museum. The scrapbooks were carefully preserved artifacts that Betty Rockwell hand curated during the time of the Outlines gallery and thankfully much of the research for this film project was based on the information preserved in the scrapbooks.
Aside from the historical artifacts that I was able to trace while researching my late grandmother's gallery, quite a few notorious artists, icons of the world of art were so kind to lend their memories and voices to this film.

Betty Rockwell's scrapbooks that are featured in the film, were beautiful but fragile artifacts that belonged in a museum. Betty hand curated these beautiful scrapbooks during the years that her gallery was operating and she preserved many of the newspaper articles, exhibit announcements, and programs that helped shape the chronology of the Outlines gallery.
The complete chronology of the Outlines Gallery from 1941-1947 was compiled in 2009-2012 by Cayce Mell, Betty's grand daughter and published in the book 'Outlines, gallery, library, theatre of modern art; a 225 page full color book that features photos from the pages of the original Outlines scrapbooks while documenting the complete chronology of the Outlines gallery.
2nd State has also digitally preserved that history so that these beautiful moments can be shared without further compromise to the original scrapbooks which have been donated by the family to the Smithsonian Archives.
